Synthetic Alchemy is a very processed based project. While they may look very digitally manipulated, this is not the case. All images are taken on both medium format and 35mm film and after processing, the negatives are subjected to different kinds of household chemicals. Occasionally I've also used different ways of applying the chemicals to the negatives which include rubbing in with gloves, using q-tips, flicking with a toothbrush, and sponging.
This project comes from the idea of noticing how film can have a very skin-like appearance. It is complosed of many layers to make an image. I was told when I was young how damaging chemicals could be to our body. While aware of how skin can be changed by chemicals, I was also aware of how chemicals also effect our environment. This project explores how to visually show these chemicals manipulating film to create a parallel to how they may be affecting ourselves and the environment around us.
